In fact, a new poll from the University of Texas shows that three out of four Americans think the United States imports most of its oil from Iraq and Saudi Arabia. US now produces most of its crude oil (as shown in the graph below) Canada, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Mexico and Columbia are major crude oil importers to US. Together, they formed approximately 72% of the total crude oil import. Approximately 40% of America's oil comes from domestic oil fields in states like Texas, Alaska, and California. Some of this oil is actually sold to other countries, such as Japan. The other 60% of the US oil supply is from foreign sources. For refineries on the East Coast, the majority of their imported oil comes from Africa, mainly Nigeria and Angola. By contrast, refineries in the Midwest get virtually all of their imported oil via pipeline from Canada. The resulting total net petroleum imports (imports minus exports) were about 0.53 MMb/d in 2019. The top five source countries of U.S. gross petroleum imports in 2019 were Canada, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Russia, and Colombia.
